Air Travel - buying tickets

With the rising cost of fuel, air ticket prices may rise; however, there are still good deals, so do your research or engage a travel agent.

Our recommendation is that you fly into and out of Rome, largely because there are more ticket options and generally cheaper fares than into other cities in Italy. From Rome, you can take the train (and we will provide step-by-step instructions for this part of your trip later on) or rent a car. When searching for fares, keep in mind that traveling on days other than Saturday and Sunday may result in less expensive tickets.

Considerations for your flight into Rome:
  • The current train schedule has trains leaving Rome for Sinalunga by way of Chiusi at 11 am and 1 pm. Allow about 2 hours from your flight arrival time to the train departure time if you plan to fly into Rome and catch the train the same day.
  • You can also arrive a day or more early, see some of the sights of Rome and meet up with other Y2Knit Experience Tuscany travelers and travel north together. All of this can be coordinated online prior to travel--starting now! If you're traveling alone, this is the ideal time and space to get acquainted with others.
Considerations for your flight from Rome:
  • When you leave Montisi, you may want to travel to other parts of Italy or Europe before going home. All major towns and cities have trains to Rome and other destinations, so you can coordinate your travel to meet your plane. We have fun at the Trenitalia website, where you can select the English option and check train times and routes.
  • If you plan to go directly from Montisi to Rome, trains leave hourly starting at noon. The earliest you can get to Rome is about 2pm. Allow about 2 hours to get to the airport and checked in. You may want to stay in Rome overnight and leave the next day to ensure that you don't miss a flight.
We will soon have a Y2Knit Travel Coordinator who will collect everyone's itinerary and passport information. We'll let you know what specifics are needed and how to provide them.

If you prefer to use a travel agent for your ticket purchase, the owner of the Villa Maddalena recommends tracy@travelteam.com. She does not deal with frequent flyer miles.

I'm really glad you started this blog, because I've been thinking that I need to get my tickets. I think I'm registered for Oct. 4-11, but can you confirm that? (Sorry, but I don't seem to have it on my calendar!) Are there any events planned for Oct. 4 so that we should get there at a particular time?

Fae, Susan will have to confirm which week you are coming--I thought I was the only person who failed to get important events on my calendar! We haven't scheduled anything significant for the 4th because people will be getting there are different times. Susan and I found it quite easy to take a flight that was overnight, getting in 9 a.m.-ish, then traveling to Villa Maddelena (arrival mid-afternoon). That way you won't miss anything, or at least can go get a nap or a walk in before dinner.
