Bit of Italy intarsia question

Since Jill and Susan are away, I'm hoping someone else can help me with the intarsia (petals) part of the BOI. Did you carry one strand of the contrast color through the whole round? Or did you do it like regular intarsia, with a short strand of the contrast color for each petal? Intarsia isn't usually done in the round, so I'm having trouble figuring this out. And usually intarsia instructions say to bring the new color under the old when changing colors, but I think this pattern says to bring the new behind the old.

I feel as if I'm already behind on the cannotiera. My yarn arrived just as I was leaving town for a week, so I just started yesterday. (Not to mention that I haven't started the body of my Italian tee, or done much on the copriletto recently!)

Hi Fae!
Don't sweat the knitting! It is supposed to be fun :) I have 1 sleeve done of the tee, 2 squares of the copriletto, and the the BOI for the vest. I like to bounce around between projects so no worries.
For the petals because I did the 2 alternate colors I did separate strands for each color and did not carry them across the back. I did carry the moss green (MC) and to be honest I can't remember which way I wrapped the yarn but it helped to catch the MC.
Because we are knitting in the round I brought the CC petal yarn back across the petal and started the next row. I tried not to pull tightly so that the petal would lay flat.
So separate CC for each petal and carry the MC was what I did.
I hope that makes sense. Remember at the beginning I said no worries now time for wine!

Thanks, Toni! I started the petals last night and they're going well.

Hi Fae!
Glad to hear the petals are going well. Are you carrying all strands across the back or doing the separate strands for each petal?

Susan, I was wondering about whether to redo this piece in intarsia, since carrying the yarn behind results in not being able to see the holes around the color points. I'm guessing that Toni (Brava Bit of Italy) knitted that piece in intarsia since the lace holes show up beautifully.

I used separate strands for each petal, and I alternated colors. I'm now done, and hope to have a picture to post soon. Valerie, I know what you mean about not being able to see the holes. I tried weaving in my ends as I knitted, but found that the color showed through so pulled them out.

Like others, I tried stranding (always try easiest first!) but ended up making mini-bobbins to work intarsia.
