I would be interested in meeting anyone arriving in Rome on Oct. 3 so that we can travel to Montisi together on Oct. 4. I'll be flying from San Francisco. If anyone has a hotel suggestion in Rome for the one night, please let me know. I've got a lot of experience traveling by myself in the U.S. and England, but I'm intimidated by the idea of traveling on my own in a country where I don't know the language.
Also, my husband plans to meet me in Italy after the retreat. We don't want to rent a car, so we're interested in how easy it is to get around Tuscany by train or bus. Will I be able to get from Montisi to Florence by train to meet him? If we stay in Florence for several days, can we get to Pisa, Siena, and other interesting places in Tuscany as day trips? I would appreciate any information that's out there.
Thanks,
Fae

It will be more fun if the group can coordinate arrival in Rome. We'll help with that once people get itineraries. We found it not too hard to travel in Italy, especially getting out of Rome as all the signs are in Italian/English.
For after, I'm so glad you are going to spend more time in Italy. We'll get you to the train and you can take the train to Florence. From there you can get to other towns by train. We love Rick Steves for travel advice and you can go on the bulletin boards and learn what other travelers have done and get hotel recommendations too. www.ricksteves.com
I'm just going to reiterate how helpful Rick Steves' books are. He has a great drawing of how the trains connect the cities & towns in Tuscany. His book, Florence and Tuscany is probably just what you want. Some towns require bus trips, but he tells you which and how. You can ask our mother about buying bus tickets as she has a funny story.
Hi Fae! I plan to leave from SF too. I need to get my flight arrangements this week. What flight are you taking? I wouldn't mind arriving in Rome 10/3. Shall we hook up?
