After trying a few times with bigger needles and worsted yarn, I think I have it. I was bringing the yarn forward as if to purl the stitch when it seems like I should just leave it in the back ready to knit the second stitch. If that's not right let me know.
Thanks, Mary Jane

Definitely leave the yarn in back to knit. It is easy once you do it, but difficult to explain. You are just reaching through the first stitch to knit the second stitch, then working the first stitch. You will all have become masters at twisted stitches! It is the Schiapparelli stitch if you want to look it up in Barbara Walker--although we found her explanation no easier to follow!
Jill. I got it. I was just making it harder than it is. It is really easy now. I'm celebrating with a cup of zinger red tea, just pretending it's the red wine you and Susan talked about!! Thanks for answering,
Mary Jane
I also had a hard time with it until I realized that I should sort of pull the second stitch up through the first. Now it's a lot easier.
