Stumped by Roots and Branches
I'm still having real technical difficulties with the patterns-- my skills just aren't up to them. I'm up to row 73 but I can't make out a real pattern yet. I'm not even positive which is the right or wrong side, although I'm guessing the odd-numbered rows make up the right side of the knitted fabric. Working with a cable needle makes it go with agonizing slowness. I ripped it all out and started over four times today. It's time for bed. Catherine in College Park

Catherine,
I'm sorry you are having a problem. The odd number rows are the right side. There is a pattern to this but it kind of changes somewhat- kind of hard to explain. Remember we are doing roots and branches which kind of zig zag around. For the cable needle I am using one of my smaller double point sock needles, probably a size 2. I find this much easier. I have knitted all of the pieces on amy expensive lantern moon sock needles. I live in Ashburn,Va out of Leesburg. Give me a call - 703-606-7697. I finished my last roots and branches last night. So I guess I have all my pieces done.

Catherine,
I also am sorry that you are frustrated by the knitting. It was my intention to make it challenging, but not to make anyone feel overly frustrated!
It will not be the end of the world if all pieces aren't done, or if you feel like you want to do something over later. Try to enjoy the process and don't worry about the result. It is your knitting and if you don't like it, it can be ripped out and redone. I will be happy to help with anything in Montisi.

Hi Catherine!
The pattern is very subtle and is more of a texture change rather than a dramatic cable like the Farfalle Knot. As Mary Jane says think about roots and how they twist and get all knotted up. The wrong side looks like waves to me and probably would make an equally interesting right side pattern.
One of the lessons I have learned from these patterns is that while I might not get it on the 1st or even 2nd try I am learning each time I do it. Now I feel like if I don't rip at least once I must not be doing it right! :) I was with a group last night working on a different project (Lucy bag) and I kid you not - at least 3 of us - me included - ripped more than once. We all knew we were in the same boat then from super experience lace knitter to novice. As Jill says - have fun! - besides we are going to be in Italy knitting!
