Swirls and Garter

I have worked one of my Swirls and Garter. I tend to knit more intuitively than square for square. I followed the chart on this one, which I don't always do, because I wanted to understand the patterning, which seemed pretty basic (and is). When I can do that, I am able to spot mistakes I make quickly.

The first repeat I knit while distracted by a swelling cellulitis from a bug bite on my left arm (now resolved). Because I am directionally challenged, I think I mixed up a incR and incL more than once. I know these stitches, but my brain sometimes goes right when it hears left and vice versa. Because of that, I may have got my count off, but I kept in pattern. I never checked my stitch count, rather compared what I knit to the chart.

On the second repeat, I did have an extra stitch at the end, so I just knit it because everything else looked grand. On the third repeat, I removed that extra stitch and worked with 20 sts on the second swirl. I'm not sure if that was correct, but it was my workaround.

Now I am going to cast on and follow the revised chart, improvising if need be to make my knitting fit!

We're getting some tropical storm weather this morning and it's not yet light at 7:45. We've had thunder and lightening and now it's raining and gloomy. I guess I'll take my pic inside under artificial light! This piece has been blocked by steam and Abigail, the cat.

Sorry, but I'm still confused about how to make the pattern fit the number of stitches. It looks like the chart has changed to match the wording for the odd-numbered rows, but that doesn't solve my problem.
